The prevention of drug and alcohol abuse in focus

30 October 2010

New treatments and prevention for drug and alcohol abuse will come under the spotlight at the annual Australian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs conference in Darwin next week.

The four day conference, Living on the Edge, held at the Darwin Convention Centre includes more than eight keynote speakers from across the globe, symposiums, workshops and presentations on Indigenous research, drug treatments, law enforcement and policy and practice.

Convenor Doctor Richard Chenhall, from the Menzies School of Health Research, said the conference will address key issues and new strategies that are relevant to the Northern Territory.

“We have an exciting program and variety of presentations that include local issues and content,” Dr Chenhall said.

“Many of the symposiums and presentations on Indigenous research were drawn from local communities including Gunbalanya and Alice Springs.

“We also welcome former award winner of the Medal of the Order of Australia Professor Dorothy Scott, who will give a keynote presentation on protecting and enhancing the wellbeing of children whose parents are substance abusers.”

Professor Scott is the Director of the Australian Centre for Child Protection and has undertaken clinical studies in the fields of child welfare, sexual assault and mental health.

Doctor Astrid Birgden will provide insight into reducing drug-related offences and the law.

Media are welcome to attend all of the events at the conference, which officially gets underway on Monday, 2 November.
