Alice Springs hot for solar

4 December 2009

The 100 Days of Solar Campaign was so successful that Alice Solar City exhausted its solar funding grants in just three months.

Two hundred residents signed up to have a rooftop solar system installed - more than double the consortium's objective - after the campaign rolled out on print and tv between 27 July and 27 November.

Alice Solar City General Manager Brian Elmer said his team was overwhelmed by the interest from the community.

“I think it is evidence of the keenness of Alice Springs residents to be more energy efficient and having access to the financial assistance through Alice Solar City made it all the more attractive.”

The number of solar systems on Alice Springs rooftops increased from two to 100 since the project was first launched in March 2008.

Up to $3.5 million has already been spent on the installations, with that number set to increase when the remaining systems are fitted.

It tops the funding grants available from Alice Solar City, but if demand remains high, the consortium has committed to look at other options to continue to help residents install solar power.
