Community consultation on play spaces in the Mall

16 September 2009

Council staff will be available to meet with members of the community to discuss children’s play spaces in the Smith Street Mall this week.

Darwin City Council is considering redeveloping the play spaces in the Mall as part of the $7 million city revitalisation project.

Deputy Lord Mayor, Alderman Helen Galton said that the Council was looking at ways to encourage children and their families to move along the Mall and that integrating inspiring and interesting play spaces was integral to that.

“We recognise how important the current play space is to Darwin families and welcome their feedback on how the area can be refreshed in line with the overall project.”

“Darwin is the only capital city in Australia with a play ground in the heart of its city mall, it is something we want to retain and build on as we develop the Smith Street Mall as a place for people to meet and connect with other parts of the city.”

“We want to be seen as a young and vibrant city – what better way to do that than have an environment that has something for everyone - big and small,” she said.

The revitalisation project is a joint funded initiative of the Australian Government, through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program, part of the $42 million Nation Building – Economic Stimulus Plan, the Northern Territory Government, Darwin City Council and the private sector.

Community consultation on the concept designs for the Smith Street Mall, Smith Street connection and Raintree Park will continue until the end of September.

Council staff will be available to discuss the play spaces in the Mall at the children’s playground on Thursday and Friday of this week from 12 – 2pm.
