Desart welcomes Indigenous arts funding boost in Federal Budget
13 May 2009
Indigenous communities will be the winners from the Government’s $10 million boost for art centres and ethical trading practices announced in last night’s Federal Budget, according to central Australia’s peak body for Aboriginal-owned art centres.
Desart’s John Oster said the funding would encourage ethical behaviour in Indigenous art trading with the implementation of the Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct.
“We’ve been advocating the implementation of this code for some time to protect the interests of Indigenous artists,” Mr Oster said.
“Desart and its art centres have led the national debate on this issue and we are delighted to see a real commitment from Government to the rights of Indigenous artists.”
Mr Oster also welcomed the increased operational funding for Aboriginal art centres.
“Aboriginal-owned art centres are a real success story in central Australia. They are leading the way in ensuring that communities benefit from the work of their artists.
“Aboriginal art centres are also encouraging new and young artists into the industry, further strengthening communities and community incomes.
“Art centres can play a key role in helping communities to close the gap of disadvantage.”
