Talking poster a first for Australia

23 July 2009

A Darwin company has launched an Australian-first technology to deliver “talking posters” for Indigenous and other multilingual audiences.

Developed in the Territory, Onetalk technology allows governments, companies and organisations to embed up to 30 seconds of audio into a disposal poster using a computer chip and tiny speaker.

Onetalk director Anya Lorimer said the poster was the ideal tool to reach Indigenous and multilingual audiences with simple messages.

“In the past, many communicators have relied on translating slabs of text into a local language. But this does not work if the audience can’t read,” Anya said.

“All Onetalk requires if for someone to push a button – or even to walk past a movement-activated poster – and the poster will talk directly to them in their own language.”

Posters can even be embedded with multiple languages, making them useful in situations where there is a true multilingual audience.

Anya said with 14 per cent of our population born overseas and 30 per cent Indigenous, Onetalk will go a long way to breaking down language barriers.

“Onetalk works particularly well when you need to get short messages across at low cost,” she said.

Onetalk has invested 100’s of hours into the development of the product over a period of 12 months and has patented its technology.
