Treat sponsorship as a business

26 February 2009

Organisations chasing sponsorship dollars need to think and act like a business if they want to do the deal, the NT Show Council has learned.

Creative Territory consultant Janelle Rees said the key question sponsors want answered remains “What’s in it for me?”

Janelle joined Creative Territory Director Tracy Jones in providing a free workshop to Northern Territory Agriculture Show Council in Darwin today on marketing and sponsorship.

NT shows are run on a not-for-profit basis by volunteer organisations. Marketing and promotions budgets are often very tight, and societies are always looking for ways to get a bigger bang for their bucks.

“It’s important to remember than sponsorship is not the same as charity. Business will treat sponsorships like a business deal, so you need to make your offer on that basis,” Janelle said.

Tracy showed council members a range of tools that can be used for marketing and promotion and urged societies to think more about web and social networking in the future.

Creative Territory is a keen supporter of not-for-profit organisations and regularly provides free workshops to selected groups.
