Building effective media relationships
22 February 2009
Effective relationships with the media means building respect on both sides, the Round Table of Young Territorians heard today.
Speaking at the 2009 Round Table’s first meeting today, Creative Territory Director Tracy Jones said it was important to understand the pressures journalists are under.
Tracy was delivering a free workshop to the Young Table, which she has supported with pro-bono media training for the past six years.
She told the 16 young Territorians one of the ways to help reporters get the story right was to provide them with written materials.
“It’s easy to mishear a number or a quote. The simplest way to overcome inaccuracies it is to provide the information in writing.”
The Youth Minister's Round Table of Young Territorians is a direct communication avenue between young Territorians and the Northern Territory Government. The Round Table consists of 16 members who are aged 15 to 25 years. Round Table members are representative of the geographic, cultural and ethnic diversity in the Northern Territory. It was established in 1997.
