Alice Springs Solar Cities Bid
A
consortium led by Alice Springs Town Council is one of the shortlisted bidders
for the Australian Government’s Solar Cities Program.
The detailed business case required the development of a Marketing and
Communications Strategy.
Creative Territory
was contracted to develop this strategy, along with a community engagement plan
that could be rolled out if the Alice Springs-based consortium is successful in
becoming a Solar City.
The
strategy and detailed documentation were developed by Creative Territory
in Darwin, 1600km away from the bid team in Alice Springs.
“It’s
a perfect example of how technology allows us to work across vast distances,”
Creative Territory Managing Director Tracy Jones says.
“Flying
to Alice Springs to meet face to face with Consortium members was out of the
question, from both a time and cost perspective. I’m sure some of the
consortium members were a little nervous in the beginning about whether we could
deliver something as personal as the community engagement strategy from Darwin.
“I’ve
spent a lot of time in Alice Springs over the years for both work and pleasure,
so I had a good understanding of the local area, what makes it so special and
the unique advantages Alice Springs offers as a Solar City.”
Being based in
Darwin and with affiliates in Sydney and New Zealand, Creative Territory
is well prepared to use technology to work across vast distances.
“It’s
something you get good at after 18 years living and working in Darwin,”
Tracy says.
“We even
have a generator back-up in our office so we can keep our link with the rest of
the world if we lose power in a cyclone. You learn to work in the environment
around you!”
The Alice
Springs bid was a winner, with the Prime Minister announcing
Alice Springs as an official Solar City in April 2007.
